Immatriculation at the Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultures
On Friday, October 26, the ceremonious matriculation of students starting their academic journey at the University of Wrocław’s Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultures took place in the Aula Leopoldina.
The Rector and Vice-Rectors of the University were represented at the ceremony by prof. Patrycja Matusz, whereas the new students were greeted by Dean, prof. Justyna Ziarkowska and Vice-Deans, prof. Wojciech Drąg and prof. Mateusz Świetlicki.
During her speech, prof. Matusz, an alumna from the Department of Dutch Studies, shared her memories and experiences with the youth gathered in the Hall.
She underscored the importance of knowledge and skills gained during her philological major, indicating that these are essential abilities for today’s flexible world.
She assigned the students their first assignment as well – to read Olga Tokarczuk’s Nobel Prize speech, with both comprehension and tenderness.
On the other hand, prof. Justyna Ziarkowska, the Dean of the Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, wished the whole audience a plethora of successes. What is more, she hoped that studying literature and languages would help the students to find themselves in difficult times, be open to other people and make friendships for a lifetime.
– Dear Students – she said, turning to the audience in the Hall – Do not look at the majority of men and crowds at the back. Take a look inside yourselves, inside research papers that you are going to study, inside the readings that are waiting for you. Take care of your sensitivity and critical assessment of the world. Respect different concepts, different ideas, different values. Be open, free and sensitive – the Dean concluded.
The ceremony was graced by the inaugural lecture given by the prof. Leszek Berezowski. Prof. Berezowski is a notable linguist and student’s favourite lecturer from the Institute of English Studies. Moreover, he’s widely known at the whole University of Wrocław for being a specialist in Christmas history. During his lecture, Prof. Berezowski proved that every one of us is a translator in everyday life, although we are not always aware of that. To illustrate his thesis, he presented various examples and anecdotes.
