Guest lecture by Professor Julien Faguer at the Library of the University of Wrocław

From 19 to 22 October, the Centre for Research on the Ancient World at the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences will host Professor Julien Faguer from Université Paris Nanterre. The visit, organised at the invitation of dr Dominika Grzesik, is funded under the IDUB project’s “Visiting Professors” programme. Professor Faguer is the author of numerous publications devoted to the epigraphic culture and economy of ancient Greece, and has taken part in and led archaeological missions in Delphi and Delos.

Professor Julien Faguer’s lecture entitled “The Delphic ‘statuescape’ in Classical and Hellenistic times: observations based on a new corpus of dedications”, will take place on 20 October at 4:40 p.m. in Room 4 of the Library of the University of Wrocław (ul. Fryderyka Joliot-Curie 12).

About the lecture

The ‘statuescape’ of Delphi combines various issues at the heart of this conference, highlighting the question of space, the dynamics of individual promotion and possible attempts by the sanctuary authorities to regulate it. The archaeological remains of this ‘forest’ of statues are mainly limited to statue bases and their inscriptions, which allow us to consider three types of visual strategies: at the level of the inscription, at the level of the monument as a whole, and at the level of the topography of the sanctuary. The latter is, however, the most difficult to reconstruct due to the high movability of statue bases, the frequency of reuse and the imperfect information regarding findspots. The preparatory work for a corpus of dedications from Delphi (CID VII) has nevertheless provided an opportunity to create a GIS of all the epigraphic material from the site, which facilitates testing and confronting hypotheses in this matter. Finally, even when the original locations of monuments are unknown, the combined study of epigraphic and architectural features makes it possible to sketch out part of the visual strategy at stake without neglecting one last agent in the picture: the workshop.
