
UWr scientists appointed to the Scientific Council of the Karkonosze National Park
Three researchers from the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management have been appointed to a new five-year term on the Scientific Council of the Karkonosze National Park.
Among the twenty members of the newly constituted Council are staff members from the Institute of Geography and Regional Development – dr hab. Marek Błaś from the Department of Climatology and Atmospheric Protection, and prof. dr hab. Piotr Migoń from the Department of Geomorphology – as well as prof. dr hab. Henryk Marszałek from the Department of Applied Hydrology at the Institute of Geological Sciences.
The current Scientific Council of the Karkonosze National Park was appointed by the Minister of the Environment through an ordinance dated 23 September 2025, concerning the appointment of the Council’s members.
In accordance with the Nature Conservation Act of 16 April 2004 (Article 98), members of a national park’s scientific council—ranging from ten to twenty individuals—are appointed by the minister responsible for environmental affairs for a five-year term. The appointments are made from among representatives of academia, practitioners, environmental organisations, and the relevant regional and local governments active in the field of nature conservation.
The main responsibilities of a national park’s scientific council include:
- submitting proposals and opinions on matters concerning nature protection and the functioning of the national park.
- assessing the park’s natural resources, features, and components;
- providing opinions on draft protection plans and conservation tasks;
- evaluating the implementation of protection plans, annual conservation measures, and their effectiveness;
- reviewing research and scientific programmes related to nature conservation;
