Digital Festival – we are transcribing Władysław Nehring’s diary
The Workflow project team at the University invites you to join the Digital Festival and help transcribe Władysław Nehring’s diary. The event is open to everyone. We will use the Virtual Transcription Laboratory, an easy and intuitive tool that anyone can learn.
On the 26th of October at 10.00, we are inviting you to our Facebook page www.facebook.com/mojetranskrypcje, and the University of Wrocław Facebook www.facebook.com/uniwroc for a live stream, during which we will explain the use of “Virtual Transcription Laboratory”, the tool serving for remote transcription of digitized manuscripts and printed texts, modern, as well as old-time. It was created at the University Library to ease the use of publications in the Digital Library of the University of Wrocław (www.bibliotekcyfrowa.pl).
During the meeting, we will present the work of VTL on a sample of Władysław Nehring’s diary (1830-1909) – a manuscript signed Akc. 1949/590 at the Library of the University of Wrocław. Its author was a Polish linguist and researcher of Slavic languages, who worked at the German University in Wrocław. He was a 19th-century researcher associated not only with Poland but also with the capital city of Lower Silesia. His rich heritage, containing lists and notes, which is not yet fully compiled, can be found in the University’s Library. Thus, the idea to promote the study of manuscripts with the help of new technologies, which, due to digitalisation, are becoming more accessible.
During the next week, starting on the 27th of October, we will enable participants to do self-directed transcriptions of the chosen texts. Thanks to it, we will get a version in which we would easier read and search, and we will get to know more about Władysław Nehring through it.
