The 80th anniversary of Wrocław Geography – a look back [photo report]

The Institute of Geography and Regional Development is one of the oldest institutes at the University of Wrocław. It was established in 1945 and commenced its teaching and research activities in November that year. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Institute, geographers from Wrocław organised a series of events, including a jubilee session, a lecture by Polish Himalayan mountaineering icon Leszek Cichy, and a field excursion led by the Director of the Institute to Kłodzka Góra in the Bardzkie Mountains.

The ceremonial session was attended by the Rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Robert Olkiewicz, university and faculty authorities, researchers from affiliated departments and institutes, university administrative staff, directors and employees of Lower Silesian national parks and other environmental management institutions, representatives of governmental and local authorities, as well as partner enterprises. We were also joined by retired staff members, alumni from various cohorts, current students and other distinguished guests.

Joining us in the celebrations were also Professor Jan Miodek and the team behind the programme Słownik polsko@polski, who recorded a special episode devoted to geography in the Institute’s Library. The episode is available on the VOD TVP website (click).

The Directorate of the Institute of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Wrocław extends its sincere thanks to all guests for taking part in the celebration.

We would also like to thank everyone involved in organising the event, including administrative and technical staff, as well as members of the J. Czyżewski Geographical Students’ Scientific Association.
