News from the Botanical Garden

Work is underway at the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław on the implementation of the project „Centrum namnażania i utrzymania ex situ gatunków z II załącznika Dyrektywy Siedliskowej oraz zagrożonych wymarciem i chronionych w Polsce – Ogród CERES.”

The main aim of the Project is to establish conservation collections of 14 plant species from Annex II of the Habitats Directive and 84 species that are endangered or protected in Poland, while preserving their biocenotic role (that is, in the presence of other plants from the specific plant communities and NATURA 2000 natural habitats to which they belong).

In addition, the planned initiatives and tasks will contribute to:

• increasing the population numbers of protected and rare species in the region, including those from Annex II of the Habitats Directive,
• preserving the gene pool of species threatened with extinction in Lower Silesia,
• safeguarding the genetic resources of species associated with endangered species, as well as other floral elements forming part of individual Natura 2000 natural habitats,
• enhancing the region’s natural potential through species protection,
• preserving the natural environmental qualities of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship,
• raising ecological awareness among local residents.

VALUE OF THE CONTRIBUTION FROM EUROPEAN FUNDS: 4,313,464.46 PLN
