„Nauka na Fali – GeoArctic Expedition 2025”
On Friday, 5 December, a special event entitled “Nauka na Fali – GeoArctic Expedition 2025” was held in the Professor A. Mycielski Lecture Hall at the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Wrocław. The meeting brought together nearly 300 secondary school pupils, university students, academic staff, and enthusiasts of sailing and science. Through a premiere screening of documentary films, participants were transported to the harsh and captivating landscapes of the Arctic.
The first film, produced by members of the expedition team, presented behind-the-scenes footage from the summer scientific expedition to Spitsbergen. During the voyage, young researchers and students from the University of Wrocław conducted geological and glaciological investigations as well as environmental observations aboard the historic sailing vessel STS Generał Zaruski. Breathtaking images of Arctic fjords, glaciers, and wildlife were combined with personal accounts of fieldwork conducted in extreme conditions and reflections on the passion driving the exploration of Earth’s processes.
The audience also viewed a film produced by the Nauka. To Lubię Foundation, whose founder, dr Tomasz Rożek, participated in the Arctic expedition. This documentary addressed key issues related to global climate change as well as the geopolitical challenges facing the Svalbard region.
Following the screenings, a panel discussion was held with special guests: dr Tomasz Rożek, science communicator and expedition officer, and the captains of the STS Generał Zaruski – Jerzy Jaszczuk, Marcin Dobrowolski, Adam Walczukiewicz and Mirosław Bielecki. The discussion covered both the scientific dimensions of the expedition and the nautical challenges encountered during the voyage, as well as future plans for similar initiatives.
The event provided an opportunity for the exchange of experiences, inspiring dialogue, and the promotion of the idea that scientific research can be not only intellectually rigorous but also an exciting adventure. The films will soon be made publicly available, while further details about the expedition can be found on the official project website.
Participants are also encouraged to view the photographic documentation of the event prepared by Paweł Piotrowski.
