Szewski czwartek
The Historical Institute at the University of Wrocław invites you to the next Szewski czwartek – this time opening up the vast medieval world of trade to participants.
On Thursday, 26 February at 6.00 p.m., the online Szewski Czwartek will host dr Cezary Kardasz from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, who will deliver a lecture entitled “Miasto i handel dalekosiężny w późnym średniowieczu. Między współpracą a presją gospodarczą i środowiskową – przykład Gdańska w XIV–XVI wieku.”
At the turn of the 16th century, Gdańsk emerged as one of the most important centres of long-distance trade in the Baltic region and a key intermediary hub linking European markets with the Vistula hinterland. The presentation will analyse the structure of Gdańsk’s commercial exchange, including its network of trading partners, range of goods, and principal trade routes.
Particular attention will be paid to the social and environmental consequences of the intensive exploitation of raw materials intended for export. The lecture will conclude with a reflection on the current state of research and the prospects for new interpretative approaches to this subject.
Note: the language of instruction is Polish.
