Interdisciplinary Conference “Christianity and Conservatism”

On 19-20 March this year, University of Wrocław, together with the European Council for Entrepreneurship, Science and Culture, is organizing an international, interdisciplinary conference titled “Christianity and Conservatism Conference”. The sessions will feature 29 representatives of the academic community and its social environment from the UK, USA, Malta, Norway, Hungary, Romania, and Poland.

The event aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the internal crisis of contemporary Christianity and its consequences for the presence of religion in the public sphere. At the same time, it is intended to be a space for debate on the origins and current forms of conservatism – from classical approaches to modern trends – in the perspective of Christian heritage and the challenges of modern democracies.

The programme consists of two complementary thematic sessions – devoted to Christianity and conservatism – including panels in both English and Polish. This structure allows for a broad comparative look at the relationship between Christianity and conservatism, covering doctrinal, institutional, and political dimensions simultaneously. A key objective of the organizers is also to foster a culture of dispute, where serious intellectual reflection is combined with genuine respect for differing viewpoints. Therefore, the programme brings together voices representing various denominational traditions, different schools of political thought, and diverse collective experiences.

In a broader social perspective, the conference is intended to contribute to a more balanced and competent debate on the role of Christianity and conservatism in contemporary societies. The presence of partners from outside the academy – including churches, advisory bodies, expert organizations, and business representatives – encourages the conclusions of the discussions to translate into practice: the shaping of public policies, social communication, civic education, and dialogue between religious communities and state institutions. In this sense, the conference is to become the beginning of a lasting cooperation network, within which the academic community and its social partners jointly seek answers to the crisis of social bonds, the polarization of public discourse, and tensions surrounding the religious and ideological identity of the modern world.

On behalf of University of Wrocław, the conference is co-organized by the Institute of Philosophy, the Centre for Prognostic Research on Religious Transformations and the Institute of European Studies, the Department of European History, Civilization and Socio-Economic Thought.
