Conference: Constitutionalism and Populism: Challenges for Democracy and the Judiciary – The Polish Perspective

On 21–22 May, the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics, in cooperation with Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, will host a conference devoted to the relationship between constitutionalism and populism.

This two-day event will provide a forum for in-depth reflection on the theoretical and practical dimensions of constitutional populism. Scholars representing the international academic community will seek to address questions concerning its nature and functioning.

On the first day (21 May), the discussions will focus on the nature and origins of populism in Poland. The speakers will then turn to institutional responses to populist governments, with particular emphasis on the role of courts and European institutions.

On the second day (22 May), the main subject of discussion will be the restoration of the rule of law. The panelists will examine the tension between legality and democratic legitimacy, as well as the possibilities for addressing the roots of populism in a durable and systemic manner.
