University Aware – universal design at the University of Wrocław

Project title: University Aware – universal design at the University of Wrocław

Operational Program: Knowledge Education Development PRIORITY AXIS III HIGHER EDUCATION FOR ECONOMY AND DEVELOPMENT 3.5 Comprehensive programs for universities

Project implementation period: from 01/07/2020 to 30/09/2023

The main goal of the project: the development of the competence of students of pedagogical studies in the use of universal design, in particular in its practical aspect, as well as increasing students’ awareness of the role of universal design in the creation of goods and services.

Activities within the DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF CLASSES ABOUT UNIVERSAL DESIGN concern:

  1. The modification of the study program with 4 specialisations in the field of Pedagogy in the 1st degree of full-time studies, consisting of the introduction of a new compulsory subject (program adapted to individual specialties) Designing a universal basis for 15 hours and study visits,
  2. The modification of the study program in both pedagogical and non-pedagogical specialisations in the field of Pedagogy during the course of full-time second-degree studies, consisting in the introduction of a new compulsory subject (program adapted to individual specialties). Taking into account the fact that graduates of other universities also undertake second-degree studies, additional complementary classes in universal design of the first cycle are planned for them, e. workshops on the basics of universal design (15 hours) and one, 2-3-day study visit, which will be organised in the 1st semester.

The following forms of support are offered under TASK II.

  1. Training Universal Design – Accessibility Principles,
  2. Workshops and practical aspects of universal design,
  3. Design Sprint moderator course,
  4. An Introduction to Universal Design for Learning, Addressing the Variability of All Learners – CAST Professional Learning training,
  5. Training in Universal Design in Higher Education.

Universal design training programs will take into account the specificity of the Pedagogy course and the specializations in which the classes will be carried out.

The aim of the training is to sensitize students to the issues of accessibility and universal design, increase practical knowledge in the field of universal design, and prepare for the implementation of universal design elements in study programs.

The contract was terminated by mutual agreement of parties due to circumstances that prevent the carrying out of the provisions contained in the contract. It was planned to change the form of classes from compulsory to optional at first-degree studies. In the case of second-degree studies, the change assumed the modification of studies from the academic year 2021/22. The commencement of the project coincided with the election calendar at the University of Wrocław and the change not only of the University Authorities, but also of the Departments. This resulted in delays in the implementation of the project. Additionally, the epidemiological situation contributed to the change in the project implementation schedule. As a result of these two circumstances, the main activities of the project were delayed. Due to the multi-stage procedure for approving changes to study programs at the University of Wrocław and taking into account the calendar of their meetings in the 2020/21 academic year, it is not possible to introduce classes from October 2021. In light of this situation, it is not possible to implement the above-mentioned project any further.
