The subsidy was granted to the Foundation for the University of Wrocław through competition for realisation of a public task “Activities in the Field of the Cultural Property and National Heritage Protection” organised by the City’s Historic Preservation Officer of Wrocław. As many as 40 offers were submitted to the competition, 38 of which met the formal requirements. The Municipality of Wrocław allocated PLN 6 835 000 for this purpose. The Foundation for the University of Wrocław received the largest subsidy of PLN 1 million for the renovation of the matroneum in the Aula Leopoldinum.
“I am glad that the work within the matroneum will finally begin. As soon as all the necessary formalities are settled, we will be able to proceed to the next stage of renovation. The total cost of this part of restoration was, actually, estimated at a larger amount but in the next few days we will adjust the scope of work to the amount of money that we have received” – says dr Łukasz Krzywka, the Rector’s Representative for Cultural Property Preservation. The renovation of the paintings, which includes the two vaults, will most likely be divided into two phases. “I think that we will use the funds from the received subsidy to renovate the paintings above the gallery. The ones below the gallery will have to wait a little bit” – adds Krzywka.
When will the restoration work begin? Today, it is still impossible to predict that. However, it may be assumed that it will not happen earlier than in June this year, considering that all the tender procedures have to be carried out before. “We are still waiting for the decision to finance the construction work within the gallery. If we receive the donation, these two projects will have to be carried out simultaneously” – Krzywka explains. The reinforcement of the matroneum’s construction is crucial. It should be done first because the scaffoldings have to be set up on a repaired and reinforced stable construction. One of the conditions of the competition is that this stage of the renovation work has to be completed by the end of the year.
The Foundation for the University of Wrocław has been awarded in other editions of the competition. The previous restoration work carried out in the Aula Leopoldinum, which included the reinforcement of the ceiling’s construction and the complex renovation of the dais, was also financed by the Municipality of Wrocław.
