He was born in 1962 in Wrocław. After successfully passing his matriculation exams in 1982, he took up physics studies at the University of Wrocław, which he completed with honours in 1987. He then continued his doctoral studies in mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. He received the academic degree of Doctor of Mathematics in the field of mathematics with specialization in the application of mathematics in 1992 on the basis of the thesis entitled “Mathematical constructions related to the Berry phase”, whose supervisor was Prof. Arkadiusz Jadczyk. After receiving his doctorate, he worked at his alma mater in the Institute of Theoretical Physics as an assistant professor. In 1998, he received an award of the Minister of National Education for scientific achievements. In 2000 the Council of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Warsaw conferred on him the academic degree of assistant professor in physics with specialization in mathematical physics on the basis of the thesis entitled Classical and quantum dynamical semigroups in the description of evolution of physical systems. Shortly thereafter, in 2004, he was made an associate professor, and four years later a full professor. Also in 2004 he was awarded the title of Professor of Physical Sciences by the President of Poland. He completed a scientific internship at Imperial College in London and was a scholarship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Bielefeld University.
Apart from scientific and didactic activity at his alma mater, he performed a number of important organisational functions. In the years 2001-2005 he headed the Department of Mathematical Methods at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Warsaw, in the term 2005-2008 he was the director of this institute, and from 2008 to 2012 he was the dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Warsaw. He was a manager and main executor of several grants from the Committee for Scientific Research, organizer of two Winter Schools of Theoretical Physics, the 21st Max Born Symposium, and in 2011 chairman of the organizing committee of the “Asia – Europe Physics Summit”. In 2012 he was elected Vice-Rector of the University of Wrocław for General Affairs, and in the 2016-2020 term he was elected Director of Information Technology.
