Elderly people

Elderly people should have a personal emergency plan. You can make your own personal emergency plan by planning ahead, staying in touch with your family and neighbours and sharing information about dangerous events with others.

PLANNING AHEAD
Disasters can occur unexpectedly, and elderly people can be particularly vulnerable to them. Elderly people can improve their safety in an emergency if they:

  • keep an emergency kit on hand at home ready to take with them when they need to evacuate,
  • know the address and telephone number of local authorities,
  • label equipment they will need such as wheelchairs, walking sticks
  • prepare a list of medicines and medical devices they use, such as pacemakers,
  • plan transportation in case of evacuation,
  • resupply medications when they run out,
  • know the phone number of the 24-hour pharmacy on duty,
  • keep emergency numbers by their phone,
  • keep a spare list of important contact numbers as well as medical information in their wallet or purse
  • develop a plan and practice the best ways to escape from home.
