An exceptional meeting with Nobel laureate – Svetlana Alexievich

On 20 June 2025 at 18:00, a unique online meeting will take place with Nobel Prize in Literature laureate, Svetlana Alexievich. This is a rare opportunity to hear the voice of one of the most outstanding contemporary Belarusian writers – an author who has given voice to an entire generation and created powerful documentary epics about the human soul during times of war, disaster, the collapse of systems, and profound social change. Her books, dedicated to topics such as Chernobyl, the war in Afghanistan, the fall of the USSR, and the trauma of Soviet and post-Soviet existence, centre above all on the human being – their emotions, fears, hopes, and memory.

During the meeting, we will discuss the events in Belarus after 2020, how Belarusian identity, language, and culture are evolving today, and whether hope is possible in a time of repression and mass emigration. Svetlana Alexievich does not offer easy answers – but she asks the questions that truly matter.

The event will be held in Belarusian and conducted online. Participation is open to those who register in advance at: https://volny-uni.eu/sustrecha-z-sviatlanaj-aleksievich

We warmly encourage you to take part – it’s a chance to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary Belarus, to feel the depth of its transformation, and to find solidarity in uncertain times. This will be a conversation about a past that still haunts us, and a future that we can still build together.
