An exhibit dedicated to José Saramago at the University of Wrocław’s Library
Until the 11th of May, you can come to see an exhibit dedicated to José Saramago’s (1922-2022) life and work called “Back to the footsteps already taken” at the University of Wrocław’s Library. It is part of the celebration of Portuguese Language Day, which falls on the 5th of May. The exhibition is located on the ground floor of the library’s building and can be viewed during the library’s opening hours; admission is free. Portuguese musician and composer, João de Sousa, played and sang at the opening of the exhibition.

“…The end of one journey is simply the start of another. You have to see what you missed the first time, see again what you already saw, see in springtime what you saw in summer, in daylight what you saw at night… You have to go back to the footsteps already taken, to go over them again or add fresh ones alongside them.” wrote José Saramago in his book Viagem a Portugal (“Journey to Portugal”, 1981).
The exhibit “Back to the footsteps already taken prepared by the Saramago Foundation to mark the centenary of the birth of Portugal’s most distinguished novelist (1922-2022), takes up the writer’s challenge – we embark on a ‘journey’ through José Saramago’s literary biography to revisit his literary, cultural and social legacy.
The exhibition is part of the celebration of World Portuguese Language Day, which falls on 5 May.

José Saramago (1922-2010) was a Portuguese writer, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1998), who only became famous in his sixtieth year with his third novel, Memorial do Convento, which was awarded the Portuguese PEN Club Prize and the Literary Prize of the Municipality of Lisbon. Fourteen books by José Saramago have been translated into Polish to date: Death at Intervals (REBIS 2019), Cain (REBIS 2013), The Elephant’s Journey (REBIS 2012), Small Memories (Świat Książki 2012), Manual of Painting and Calligraphy (REBIS 2010), Seeing (REBIS 2009), The Stone Raft (REBIS 2003), The History of the sledge of Lisbon (REBIS 2002), The Double (REBIS 2002), Blindness (REBIS 1999), Baltazar and Blimunda (REBIS 1993) oraz The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (REBIS 1992).
