Another missing person found using the SARUAV system

The SARUAV system, developed by a team of researchers at SARUAV sp. z o.o., a company operating under the auspices of the University of Wrocław, used to automatically detect people in aerial photographs taken from unmanned aerial vehicles, has found missing person in South Tyrol, Italy.

At the beginning of August 2024, the SARUAV system was used by rescuers of the Bergrettungsdienst im Alpenverein Südtirol organisation, whose drone team stationed at Sand in Taufers successfully located a lost person using the SARUAV system. Unfortunately, the person found did not survive. The same area had previously been searched by two helicopters. The operations took place in very difficult mountainous terrain. This demonstrates how SARUAV effectively complements the broad spectrum of search and rescue methods available.

This was the second detection carried out automatically during search and rescue operations thanks to SARUAV software. Recall that the first successful detection took place in 2021 in the Beskid Niski region and was the world’s first automatic detection of a missing person on aerial imagery taken from a drone. You can read about it in a scientific article by prof. Tomasz Niedzielski and his team(https://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/13/23/4903). A search and rescue operation in the Beskid Niski region then ended with the rescue of a missing man.

The SARUAV system has been implemented in search and rescue services not only in Poland, but also in other European countries and, more recently, even in Asia (see saruav.pl under ‘IMPLEMENTATIONS’).
