Applications for the Wrocławska Wolność badge

The badge of honour “Wrocławska Wolność” is of particular importance to the University of Wrocław. The badge is awarded to Heroes and Heroines who, even in the most difficult and unfavourable times, remembered freedom, truth, human rights, justice and solidarity.

This year, the academic community of Wrocław is celebrating two important anniversaries – the 55th anniversary of the events of March, 1968, and the 35th anniversary of the May, 1988 student strike. The jury for the “Wrocławska Wolność” badge would like to remind of and honour the Heroes and Heroines of these events.

We are looking for people who, in connection with the events of March, 1968, were members of students’ strike and coordination committees, as well as those repressed for participating in the strike. Employees of the University of Wrocław who openly supported the youth on strike may also be submitted for the badge.

Additionally, we are looking for the Heroes and Heroines of the events of 1988 – members of the structures of the strike, student opposition activists, as well as creators of the “drugi obieg” magazine. We also remember the activists of the University’s underground “Solidarność” providing support for the youth on strike.

The jury will consider each and every application that meets the requirements for the prize – those “who in the period of communist dictatorship before 1989, as members of the University of Wrocław community (employees or students) stood up for fundamental values such as freedom, truth, justice and human dignity”.

Candidates for the badge may be submitted by the members of the Senate of the University of Wrocław, councils of institutes and faculties, as well as groups of at least 5 employees of the University. Applications will be accepted until May 19, 2023 in Rector’s Office through emails to rektor@uwr.edu.pl, or submitted in person (the Office is located in the Main Building of the University of Wrocław, pl. Uniwersytecki 1). The application form may be found on the University’s website (appendix to the announcement). The badge of honour “Wrocławska Wolność” may also be awarded posthumously, in which case it is given to a representative of the closest family.
