Arqus for Ukraine – workshops
A workshop will be held at the University of Wrocław on 24-25 April to support the development of academic education in Ukraine. Representatives of universities from Kiev, Lviv and Chernivtsi will take part.
Any assistance to our eastern neighbours is important. – However, we should not only focus on military or humanitarian aid, we would also like to show the Ukrainian academic community the possible ways of development, the directions in which European universities are currently moving,” says the rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Robert Olkiewicz.
– This is what the workshops organised with our partners from Arqus universities are designed to achieve, explains UWr Vice-Rector, prof. Patrycja Matusz. – The workshop is aimed at the administrative and scientific staff of higher education institutions in Ukraine (Lviv National University, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Chernivtsi National University, Kyiv National University).
During the workshop, experts will discuss, among other things, ‘The contemporary model of university management towards the challenges of the 21st century on the example of the Arqus Consortium’. The keynote of this workshop will be the responsibility of the university towards the challenges of the 21st century. In addition, a methodology for consortium building and project management in a cross-cultural environment will be presented.
Representatives of academic staff from Ukrainian universities will also have the opportunity to learn about the methodology of building joint study programmes, while administrative staff will be introduced to the idea of social responsibility in business.
Next week’s meeting is made possible thanks to NAWA funding. They are part of a broader cooperation with the Ukrainian side. NAWA funds will also enable doctoral students from Ukrainian universities to participate in two summer schools organised at the University of Wrocław. The first will be on democracy, the second on speleology.
As early as May, doctoral students – also from the University of Wrocław – will be able to participate in the Arqus Summer School on democracy: “Ukraine on the Road to Europe”. – The school is organised under the patronage of the Arqus Alliance and we will host in Wrocław a number of doctoral students from this alliance and some from Ukrainian universities, says prof. Piotr Sula (Department of Political and Administrative Systems, Institute of Political Science, UWr).
The outbreak of war obviously disrupted education at all levels, including academia. In addition to the massive damage to the infrastructure, staff as well as students were cut off from the normal educational process, which is very important especially for, among others, students of natural sciences (participation in internships and field exercises).
– Last year, we organised the first edition of the International Summer School of Karst and Speleology in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland with the participation of students from Ukraine and Poland. The classes were conducted by lecturers from Poland, Ukraine and Italy. The school was a great success, emphasises prof. Krzysztof Stefaniak (Department of Palaeozoology, Faculty of Biological Sciences, UWr). – And for these reasons, we have decided to continue the idea of a summer school, but in a broader formula with the participation of students from universities associated in the Arqus European University Alliance.
The summer school is planned for 16-23 July in Wrocław (Lower Silesia), and in Siedlce near Złoty Potok (Kraków-Częstochowa Upland). And its theme will be ‘Caves and karst areas as unique time capsules for accessing both the past and future environments of the Earth, including their protection due to threats from anthropopression and global warming’.
The programme for the event is attached.
