Arqus Seeks Tutors for Language Cafés
This autumn marks the launch of another edition of Arqus’s highly popular virtual language cafés. The Alliance is seeking volunteer tutors willing to run one café once a week for one hour, from 19 September 2022 until 16 December 2022. To become a tutor, applicants must have a fluent command of at least one foreign language (being a native speaker is not required).
Arqus Café was created by Leipzig University with the participation of the Alliance’s partner institutions. The aim of this initiative is to practise language skills in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. The format of each café is entirely up to the tutor — activities may include games, watching films, or leading discussions. New tutors are provided with brief training by the organisers. Running a café is an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills as well as to help others.
The Arqus cafés resound with a multilingual buzz, featuring not only the languages of Alliance partners and other European languages. In previous editions, participants could sign up for sessions conducted in English, German, French, Spanish, Lithuanian, and Italian, as well as Turkish, Arabic, and Brazilian Portuguese. New languages — even very exotic ones — are warmly welcomed.
Both students and staff from the nine universities belonging to the Arqus Alliance may participate free of charge. The only requirement is a minimum proficiency in the relevant language at A2 level.
