Being Human – an incubator building bridges between disciplines

Established in 2021, the Being Human Incubator of Scientific Excellence is a research incubator focused on human nature that is unique in Poland and rare in Europe, combining the humanities with the biological and evolutionary sciences.

The goal of the Being Human Incubator is to test humanistic hypotheses using empirical methods. In the case of Being Human, “building bridges” between disciplines is not a metaphor, but a research practice.

In the video below, the incubator’s director, Prof. Steward Craig Roberts (professor of psychology), and staff members share the impressive results of the incubator’s activities.

The members of the incubator are: dr hab Piotr Sorokowski (project coordinator and field director), professor at the University of Wrocław; dr hab. Agnieszka Sorokowska, professor at the University of Wrocław (Institute of Psychology); prof. dr hab. Mirosław Kocur, (Institute of Cultural Studies), dr hab. Wojciech Małecki, professor at the University of Wrocław (Institute of Polish Philology), and four postdocs: dr Marta Kowal, dr Michał Misiak, dr Michał Stefańczyk, dr Piotr Fedurek, and doctoral student Anna Kusztal. In addition, the Incubator collaborates with numerous researchers and scientists from various disciplines.

Being Human is one of seven Incubators of Scientific Excellence established at the University of Wrocław in 2021 as part of the ministerial project “Initiative of Excellence – Research University.”

The goal of the Incubators of Scientific Excellence is to measurably increase scientific achievements in research areas that, on the scale of the University of Wrocław, have lower international recognition.
