Burkinabè Sculptor Bomavé Konaté to visit the UWr Museum
The University of Wrocław Museum invites you to an author’s meeting between Magda Podsiadły and the sculptor Bomavé Konaté, which will take place on Friday, 30 May 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Oratorium Marianum.
Bomavé Konaté is a traditional and ritual sculptor from Burkina Faso and a member of the Bwaba people.
He is a renowned artist in his home country, celebrated for his craftsmanship and deep knowledge of traditional art. His image has appeared on a postage stamp, and he has been awarded the Order of Arts, Literature and Communication by the President of Burkina Faso. For years, Konaté has also been active in France, where he has held exhibitions, created installations, conducted workshops, and sculpted using local European wood. In 2021, he became the subject of a comic book published in France. In 2024, he completed a 10-metre totem sculpture commissioned by the municipality of Coublevie near Grenoble, carved from the trunk of a dead giant sequoia.
The artist will speak about the role of the traditional and ritual sculptor, as well as the spiritual and social functions of masks in community life.
The meeting will be translated from French into Polish.
The event accompanies the ongoing exhibition “Uwikłane. Dawne pozaeuropejskie zbiory etnograficzne Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego”, organised in collaboration with the National Museum in Wrocław, on view until 2 November 2025.
