Campaign for clean air

As of 1 July 2024, it is not allowed to use off-class “fossil fuel” in our province – at this important moment for Lower Silesia, we encourage you to see the exhibition “Młodzi reporterzy na rzecz poprawy jakości powietrza” (“Young reporters for improved air quality”).

The exhibition has already been presented at the Wrocław Zoo and the New Horizons Cinema. In July, it can be seen at the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław.

The artworks were created as part of Project LIFE-MAPPINGAIR/PL, which has been running at the University of Wrocław since 2019. Its goal is to educate the public on various aspects of air quality. A variety of ways were used to do this, one of which was the “Młodzi reporterzy na rzecz poprawy jakości powietrza” (“Young reporters for improved air quality”) art contests to encourage children and young people to think more deeply about the topic.

The first edition of the competition, in which our UWr climatologists sought to draw attention to basic problems with air quality and simply to be “Na tropie czystszego powietrza” (On the track of cleaner air”), was organized in 2020. In the next rather difficult edition, as it was conducted in 2021, under conditions of pandemic and lockdown, the youngest had to answer the question “Co z tym powietrzem?” (“What about the air?”). In 2022, in the next edition, our scientists tried to show the impact of air quality on health and emphasize that “It’s not just the lungs!” that get sick.

The project is an education and information campaign for cleaner air under the EU LIFE , implemented thanks to a grant from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.

As part of the project, carried out together with Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the City of Bydgoszcz, a number of activities have been carried out, one of which is information promotion for clean air.

The artwork on display in our Botanical Garden is just one of the results of these activities.

In addition, a network for the measurement of particulate matter concentrations, built as part of the LIFE-MAPPINGAIR/PL project, implemented at UWr’s Department of Climatology and Atmospheric Protection. The measurement network is a joint effort of teams from the Department of Climatology and Atmospheric Protection of IGRR UWr, Wrocław University of Technology Network and Supercomputing Center and Bydgoszcz City Hall.

(Measurement results are presented at: www: https://airquality.uni.wroc.pl  )

– Certainly, these types of activities provide the public with a sound knowledge of air pollution issues, ways to improve it, and the impact of air quality on health and quality of life. On the other hand, the contests show how children and young people see the problem – emphasizes dr Tymoteusz Sawinski, Project Manager of Mappingair.pl.

The exhibition will last until the end of July.
