Thursday, 25 April 2024, marked the end of a series of workshops on the origins of the manuscript book and writing offered to students as part of the BEYOND LANGUAGE course. During the first two meetings, mgr Dawid Kuriański and dr Adam Poznański from the Manuscripts Department of the University Library in Wrocław, introduced the students of the MSI College to the fascinating origins and dynamic changes in writing over the past centuries. Writing itself, and even more so the written and printed book, are groundbreaking, albeit relatively ‘new’ inventions in the history of cultural and linguistic development.

Candidates for deans have already been formally elected at four UWr faculties. Once the elections have been approved by the University Electoral Commission, the Rector will appoint the new deans on 1 September, in addition to the three deans from the faculties that were created after the division of the Faculty of Letters. In the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Social Communication and Media and the Faculty of Neophilology, elections will be held in October and November.

Another edition of Millennium Docs Against Gravity is coming! The Wrocław edition of the festival will last from the 10th to the 19th of May. At Lower Silesian Film Centre (Dolnośląskie Centrum Filmowe; DCF), we will present over seventy documentaries from all over the world. Unforgettable cinematic journeys will traditionally be accompanied by meetings with creators and protagonists and debates regarding important topics presented on the screen.

Wednesday evening. The dissecting room. Where else but here is the best place to learn about anatomy?
Our students and doctoral students attended a special educational workshop on the history of anatomy by candlelight. In the dissecting room at the University of Life Sciences, they had the opportunity to actually participate in an attempt to recreate a modern lesson in animal anatomy.

Lemkos are a national minority whose origins date back to the period between the 14th and the first half of the 16th century. They lived in the Lemko Region, an area situated between Polish and Slovakian ethnic territory. The region included Beskid Sądecki, Beskid Niski, and fragments of Bieszczady Mountains. These individuals are part of the Slavic nations and have Byzantine origin in their faith. They have their own language, writing, culture, and customs. For a few hundred years, they were themselves, Rusyn–Lemkos.

Four students from the University of Wrocław became laureates of the BioLAB Program 2024/2025. One-year traineeships in American research institutions as a part of the program were awarded to Iga Sudoł and Maja Wierzbińska, second-cycle students in Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology at the Faculty of Chemistry. Weronika Gniadzik, a second-cycle student in Genetics and Experimental Biology at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and Dominika Rudzka, a second-cycle student in Genetics and Experimental Biology at the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

This year, just before the recruitment for the next academic year, individual faculties and institutes of the University of Wrocław will organise OPEN DAYS. This will be a series of events during which candidates for studies at our University will have the opportunity to get to know the fields of study, scientific associations, see the buildings of the faculty or institute, listen to interesting popular science lectures, meet their future lecturers, talk to students of specific fields of study and, of course, find out everything about the university recruitment procedure. The first edition of the Artificial Intelligence Olympiad starts today, 22 April. The initiative is the result of extensive cooperation between four Polish universities: Jagiellonian University, Adam Mickiewicz University, the University of Warsaw and the University of Wrocław (Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science). The aim of the Olympiad is to select a four-person team to represent Poland at the International Olympiad of Artificial Intelligence for secondary school students (IOAI) , which will be held in Burgas (Bulgaria) from 9-15 August this year.

From 15 to 20 April, the Digital Justice Center had the pleasure of hosting a Professor from the University of Cologne, Thomasa Weigenda. This visit became possible through funding received from a competition awarding short visits for professors, financed by IDUB (Initiative of Excellence – Research University)
