    Prof. Anna Pacześniak of the Institute of European Studies at the University of Wrocław has been nominated – as one of six people in the whole of the European Union – to the Committee of Independent Eminent Persons. This was announced on behalf of the Conference of Presidents by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

    On the basis of a decision of the Scientific Council of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language in Mannheim, prof. dr hab. Joanna Szczęk has been appointed as a member of the International Scientific Council of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language.

    The latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject, published on 22 January, included as many as eight disciplines of science at the University of Wrocław. As was the case last year, the highest rankings were Law (ranked 301+) and Psychology (ranked 301-400).

    The January issue of Nature Communications published a paper showing how ribosomes (the translational machinery) change their position during the sporulation process in the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The research was carried out by a team of dr hab. Agata Starosta from the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in cooperation with scientists from our University’s Faculty of Biotechnology – dr Joanna Hołówka and prof. Jolanta Zakrzewska-Czerwińska.

    The University of Wrocław was ranked 871st in the world, 346th in Europe, and 8th in Poland in the QS Sustainability Ranking 2025. The highest score was awarded in the category of Governance as the UWr was placed 485th in the world, 42nd in South-Eastern Europe, and 7th in Poland. QS Sustainability Ranking is concerned with the sustainable development of universities, and its first edition took place three years ago.

    Once again, the UWr Institute of Computer Science will be the organiser of the ICPC Central Europe Regional Contest. From 13 to 15 December, our university will host seventy three-person teams consisting of programming enthusiasts from top universities in Central Europe, who will face complex algorithmic tasks.
