Centre for the Doctrine and Training of the Armed Forces together with UWr

The University of Wrocław is entering into an agreement with the General Władysław Sikorski Centre for the Doctrine and Training of the Armed Forces. The agreement will benefit the military: on the work of researchers from the University of Wrocław, but also students of the Wrocław university, e.g. by doing internships and placements at the Centre for Doctrine and Training.

As the director of the Centre for Doctrine and Training of the Armed Forces, col. dr Andrzej Lis, and the rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Robert Olkiewicz, unanimously stated in the signed agreement, both the university and the military understand how important it is to work together to improve the state of national security and the development of the Polish Armed Forces. Especially in view of the situation in Ukraine.

– The armed forces need the support of science, but they also need an outside look, to go beyond such a ‘military bubble’ in which we military function. On the one hand, we want to understand how the military and the military are perceived outside, on the other hand, this look from the outside, the support of science for us will give us a chance to be better present in the world of civilians, explained colonel Lis.

This is not the first such cooperation between the University of Wrocław. In recent years, the University of Wrocław has initiated and successfully conducted cooperation with, for example, the Wrocław Zoo, the municipal transport company MPK, or in the field of science and research with the Łukasiewicz Centre or, as part of international cooperation, with the German Casus Zentrum.

– I am very pleased that such an agreement has been concluded – it fits perfectly with the university’s third mission, where, in addition to research and student education, we are also to influence society and the local environment. And here the cooperation with the Centre for Doctrine and Training of the Armed Forces is precisely the fulfilment of this third mission.

In practice, this cooperation already exists. Students from other Polish universities, with which the Centre has signed a similar agreement, undergo internships and placements at the military centre.

– But you don’t have to go to Warsaw to cooperate with the Centre,” adds dr Paweł Wróblewski from the Faculty of Social Sciences, who will be one of the leaders of this cooperation project in practice.

– Already in 2019, our students in workshops have been examining and pointing out how to reduce the distance between the military and society. For example, we have such a specialisation at the University of Wrocław, ‘religious studies and intercultural dialogue’, and within this specialisation we study with students how to deescalate conflicts. This is real knowledge that can help the military during, for example, military missions.

The University of Wrocław and the Centre for Doctrine and Training of the Armed Forces have agreed to exchange experience in scientific and research achievements, including by sharing information and scientific materials and exchanging information on completed scientific and research work on agreed topics. They want to carry out joint research projects, organise short-term specialist courses under the terms of separate specific agreements, or carry out unpaid internships and student placements.

Col. dr Andrzej Lis also presented the University of Wrocław with a ryngraf of the Centre.

– This is a good start to our cooperation. It will certainly continue for years to come, col. Lis summarised the meeting.
