Conference of European metropolises METREX – report

On April 24-26, an international conference of European metropolises organized by METREX* was held in Wrocław. It was attended by over 100 experts from 15 countries: specialists in urban planning, financing urban development, EU policies, and representatives of local authorities.

The conference was accompanied by workshops, during which students, led by experts from Poland and European cities, developed new ideas for Społeczny Square. Currently, the main purpose of the square is transport. When designing this area, it was considered in what direction the design of cities should go, and what is their future after the pandemic and during the climate crisis.

The participants represented six faculties of Wrocław universities. Together with friends from Milan and Turin, they worked in five interdisciplinary teams. The Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management of the University of Wrocław and the field of study of spatial economy were represented by: Zofia Dzierżanowska (2nd year, BA studies), Arina Kastsiuk (1st year, BA studies), Karolina Pakulska (2nd year, BA studies), Filip Englert (2nd year, MA studies), Marcel Jedliński (1st year, BA studies). The event was supervised by Katarzyna Piskorek from Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The workshop was hosted by the Local Activity Center — Centrum na Przedmieściu.

The program of the workshop was very intensive, it included a study visit, integration activities, facilitated brainstorming, lectures, consultations with experts, and working in multidisciplinary teams. A mini lecture ‘Climate Change Mitigation in Metropolitan Areas’ was given by dr Anna Grochowska, head of the Social Participation Workshop at the Spatial Development Department. On the last day of the conference, the projects were presented to METREX experts.
