Correspondence in the past and present – from manuscript to editing and data analysis

The Department of Editing and the Department of Corpus Linguistics of the Institute of Polish Studies at the University of Wrocław invite you to participate in an interdisciplinary academic seminar entitled ‘Korespondencja dawniej i współcześnie – od rękopisu do edycji i analizy danych’ (eng. Correspondence in the past and present – from manuscript to editing and data analysis). The event will take place on 25 April 2025 (Friday) at the Institute of Polish Studies of the University of Wrocław, pl. Nankiera 15b, in room 125. The seminar is scheduled to start at 9.30 a.m.

The seminar has been divided into three thematic blocks, which show a diverse approach to research on epistolography: from modern digital tools to editing and historical and cultural reflection.

  1. Wokół cyfrowych laboratoriów (eng. Around digital laboratories)
The first part of the event will be devoted to technologies supporting the development and analysis of correspondence collections. Speakers from the University Centre for Digital Humanities in Wrocław will present, among other things, the possibilities of tools such as DigiLab and TransLab, the application of artificial intelligence in computer linguistics, as well as issues related to the interoperability of digital collections.
  2. Wokół Polskiego Korpusu Korespondencji Prywatnej (eng. Around the Polish Private Correspondence Corpus)
The second block will focus on the challenges of digitisation, data collection and analysis in the context of building the Polish Private Correspondence Corpus. Topics such as changes in correspondence practices and methods of acquiring and archiving letters will be discussed.
  3. Wokół edycji listów (eng. Around the editing of letters)
The last part will include reflections on editing and the cultural significance of letters. Topics related to the development of biographical sources, verbal and visual elements of epistolography, and the status of the letter as a literary genre will be discussed.

We cordially invite you to participate in the event and join us in reflecting on the changes in correspondence practices!
