Cross-Cultural Study on the Prevalence of Pathological Lying

Researchers from the University of Wrocław and Angelo State University are conducting a study on the prevalence of pathological lying.

The project was initiated by Drew Curtis of Angelo State University in Texas. In Poland, the study is coordinated by prof. Bogusław Pawłowski from the Department of Human Biology and Anna Chmielińska.

As the researchers emphasise, each of us encounters various forms of deviation from the truth — from minor omissions to more serious lies; from entirely fabricated stories to situations in which the truth is mixed with omitted or added details. Some lies are easy to detect, while others are remarkably subtle. Sometimes they stem from good intentions, sometimes from self-interest, and at other times they are meant to protect someone.

– These differences are precisely what we want to understand better. We are interested in respondents’ own experiences and personal perspectives. Everyone who takes part in our study and completes the questionnaire helps to broaden our understanding of the nature of truth avoidance. If you have a moment, please join the study and tell us how often you find yourself lying. Every response matters – encourages Anna Chmielińska.

We invite you to take part in a short study on truth and lying in everyday communication: LINK TO THE QUESTIONNAIRE
