Not often does a musicologist combine the skills of art sciences with computer science. Professor Tim Crawford of the Department of Computing is a musicologist, with years of experience in science and art, who has devoted most of his academic career to lute music. He is the author of many academic publications, and one of the main editors of the Silvius Leopold Weiss: Sämtliche Werke für Laute (Bärenreiter Verlag), a publication of a Silesian lutenist connected to Wrocław, who lived at the same time as J.S. Bach (1685-1750). Professor Crawford dedicated the last several years to digital musicology and the development of tools enabling the use of new technologies in the study of music. His lecture will focus on one of his F-TEMPO projects, in which he applied Optical Music Recognition, an automatic recognition of images interpreted as musical notation in prints. The extraction of information involves converting musical notations into digital language, considering the entire piece of music on a similar basis to how OCR works in Google Books. This tool allows to search music sources for certain information, considering the entire notation of the piece of music and musical grammar, which was previously impossible to achieve in musicology (the previous methodology was based mainly on the use of manually entered musical incipits).

Meetings with staff, doctoral students, and students of the Institute of Musicology of the University of Wrocław, the University Center for Digital Humanities, and the Music Collection Department of Wrocław University Library are scheduled during his stay.

Project coordination: dr Grzegorz Joachimiak (grzegorz.joachimiak@uwr.edu.pl)
