The Chairs of Contemporary History, German Literature and Culture, and the Centre for Research on Film and Audiovisual Culture of the German Language Area, Library of Willy Brandt Center for German and European Studies of the University of Wrocław would like to invite you to the conference “Powstanie ludowe w NRD. Historia – Literatura i Film – Pamięć” (“Popular Uprising in the German Democratic Republic. History – Literature and Film – Memory”)
The 70th anniversary, which falls this year, of one of the first anti-communist demonstrations in the Eastern Block, on 17 June 1953, is an excellent opportunity to recall these events, show their functioning in literature and film, and share the current memory of them all.
During the sitting the course of the popular uprising in the GDR and the reactions of special services in Poland and the GDR to this event will be presented. We will look closely at various positions of writers and press echoes of events in Poland and Germany, as well as the state of the research on the uprising.
Specialists who have been dealing with GDR issues and Polish-GDR relations for years will attend the sitting. An additional point of the program will be to draw attention to the regional echoes of the uprising in Poland on the example of Upper Silesia and the German minority.
