Glaciers, tsunamis and… sand mafias?
In one of the episodes of Herbatki z Naukowcem on Radio Rodzina, we have the opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of Earth sciences with prof. Mateusz Strzelecki, head of the Department of Geomorphology at the Institute of Geography and Regional Development of the University of Wrocław, and director of the Alfred Jahn Cold Regions Research Centre. He is a geomorphologist and researcher specialising in polar regions.
Professor Strzelecki spoke about working in the Arctic, the challenges faced by Polish scientists, the achievements of the Polish polar station, and plans to establish the first Polish research station in Greenland. He also discussed the geopolitical significance of the Arctic, the global “sand mafia” and the race for natural resources, the impact of glacier melt on Polish cities and rivers, how polar research can support local communities, including those in Wrocław and Lower Silesia and the role of scientists in educating young people about the climate.
This conversation brought together science, politics, economics and the climate. We encourage you to listen! LINK TO THE INTERVIEW
