Good practice in academic mediation

Academic institutions fulfil a mission of advancing research and providing higher-level education. Wherever academic work is involved, disputes are to be expected, and these may sometimes develop into conflicts that must be managed in such a way as to prevent them from becoming destructive to academic institutions themselves — universities, research and educational institutes, and academic publishers — as well as to the individuals employed by them.

One of the most effective ways of resolving disputes is mediation. In her latest book, published by the University of Wrocław Press, dr hab. Magdalena Tabernacka, prof. UWr (Institute of Administrative Sciences), drawing on more than twenty years of research experience in mediation and almost thirty years of experience in academic institutions, proposes a model for managing academic disputes through the use of mediation.

In the publication “Dobre praktyki w mediacjach akademickich”, the author outlines typical conflict situations in academic institutions and, against this background, proposes a model for applying mediation between members of staff, between students, and between these two groups that together form the academic community. — I hope that this book will help readers gain some distance from conflict areas that are inevitable at universities and within academic institutions, and that it will serve as a valuable guide to the use of mediation in these settings — comments dr hab. Magdalena Tabernacka, prof. UWr.

We warmly encourage readers to explore the publication. The book has been published in open access and can be downloaded from the website of the University of Wrocław Press.

The author would also like to express her sincere thanks to dr Katarzyna Kobielska for the invitation to participate in the project, without which this publication would not have been possible.
