Grant for a researcher from the Faculty of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

In the July distribution of Miniatures, grants from NCN were awarded to five people from our University, among them dr Marcin Borowski from the Department of Russian Literature and Culture at the Institute of Slavic Studies in the Faculty of Faculty of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures for the project ‘Obrazy „psychopatów” w twórczości Fiodora Dostojewskieg’ (PLN 6,325.00)

– My scholarly interest in Dostoyevsky and his influence on modernity dates back to my student days and has not died out to date – says dr Marcin Borowski. – In my monograph Obraz „ateisty” w twórczości Fiodora Dostojewskiego w świetle ateizmu współczesnego, I presented a modern approach to the theme of faith and disbelief as depicted in the Russian writer’s works; at the moment, I am also working on a project analysing the use of Dostoyevsky’s ideas in Russian wartime propaganda.

The aim of the planned scholarly activity is to formulate preliminary findings on the directions of literary analyses of the characters referred to as ‘psychopaths’ by scholars of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s works. At the same time, it is an attempt at a transdisciplinary juxtaposition of psychopathy as historically understood with the need to examine this phenomenon in the context of contemporary medicalising discourse in psychology and psychiatry and the integration of ‘medical humanities’ into the study of fiction.

The outcome of the research carried out under the NCN MINIATURA 8 grant is expected to be an interpretation of Dostoevsky’s images of ‘psychopaths’ in a contemporary psychopathological context and a proposal for a completely new reading of them, which could also potentially lead to a completely new interpretation of the philosophical and religious overtones of some novels.

A total of 63 people in the country will carry out preliminary research, pilot studies, queries, scientific internships, research and consultation trips thanks to funding from the MINIATURA 8 competition.

From UWr, in addition to dr Marcin Borowski , grants were also awarded to:

dr Olga Hałub-Kowalczyk for the project ‘Prawo dostępu do wody w prawie międzynarodowym’ (PLN 20 269.00)  https://uwr.edu.pl/en/regulation-of-the-right-of-access-to-water-and-human-rights/

dr Konrad Lipiński for the project ‘Przestępstwa „bez winy”’ (PLN 21 300.00) https://uwr.edu.pl/en/minature-for-guilt-free-crime-research/

dr Alicja Sielska for the project ‘Celowe postarzanie produktu w oparciu o kreację potrzeb ludzkich z uwzględnieniem różnic płciowych – analiza zjawiska na przykładzie wybranych miast Polski’ (PLN 23 000.00)

dr Edyta Włodarczyk-Czech for the project ‘Sytuacja polityczno-prawna zakonów niemieckich migrujących ze Śląska na tereny niemieckie po zakończeniu II wojny światowej’ (PLN 22 319.00) https://uwr.edu.pl/en/miniatures-for-our-scientists/

The aim of the MINIATURA competition is to support scientific activities that are the starting point for developing the premises of a research project, the financing of which can then be applied for in NCN competitions or other national and international competitions. During the eighth edition of the competition it was possible to obtain funding of between PLN 5,000 and PLN 50,000 for the implementation of an annual scientific activity. Read more:
