Grant successes of students from two faculties
Student initiatives from the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics and the Institute of Archaeology at the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences have received funding under the project “Wsparcie studentów w zakresie podniesienia ich kompetencji i umiejętności”, organised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education within the framework of the European Funds for Social Development Programme 2021–2027.
A team of fifth-year students from the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics – Natalia Hutnik, Marcelina Chmielewska, Maja Bałuszek, Zofia Reguła, Martyna Gil, lic. Gracjan Ciupa and lic. Jakub Stachurka – under the academic supervision of dr Maciej Gajos, secured over PLN 170,000 in funding for the project “Udział studentów Wydziału Prawa, Administracji, Ekonomii Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego w międzynarodowych konkursach i turniejach z zakresu prawa międzynarodowego i arbitrażu handlowego.”
This initiative will enable students interested in international law and commercial arbitration to take part in the 33rd Vis Moot Court, an international competition featuring simulated court proceedings.
It is worth emphasising the global scope of this competition. Preliminary rounds (so-called premoots) take place on almost every continent – this year’s events will be held, among others, in Malaysia, Mexico, and at Harvard University. In moot court competitions, students work on a case from a particular field of law (e.g. public international law, European Union law, or international commercial arbitration), based on which they prepare written pleadings. They then participate in simulated hearings, competing against teams from universities across Europe and around the world.
In previous years, participation by the faculty’s team was made possible thanks to IDUB Young Researcher grants.
Through their involvement in these competitions, students gain:
– Social competences in public speaking, argumentation, conflict resolution, teamwork, and clear, precise expression of ideas;
– Academic competences in analysing legal literature, developing research methods, identifying and interpreting legal problems, constructing logical lines of argument, and drafting pleadings;
– Presentation skills, including speaking before an audience and experts, structuring speeches logically, responding to questions from judges, and managing body language and expression;
– Networking opportunities, through contact with legal professionals, the establishment of mentoring relationships, exchange of experience with students from other countries, and the development of a professional and competent image.
The second project, entitled “Rozwój kompetencji analitycznych i prezentacyjnych poprzez interdyscyplinarne badania nad tekstyliami prekolumbijskimi i udział w międzynarodowych konferencjach,” received funding of over PLN 44,000.
Research in this field is being conducted by scholars from the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Wrocław, including prof. Józef Szykulski, who leads the research project Dolina Atico – Peru w epoce prekolumbijskiej. Rozwój i relacje interkulturowe pomiędzy społecznościami obszaru gór i pustyni południowego Peru.
