Guest lecture by prof. Mateja Germ at the Faculty of Biological Sciences

As part of the IDUB Visiting Professors programme, the Faculty of Biological Sciences will be hosting Professor Matej Germ from the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). Professor Germ will be staying at the Department of Ecology, Biogeochemistry and Environmental Protection from 29 September to 3 October 2025. During her visit, she will give an open lecture entitled Macrophytes – an important component in aquatic habitats, which will take place on 2 October 2025 from 10:00 to 11:00 in the lecture hall of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at ul. Kanonia 6/8.

Bio

Professor Mateja Germ conducts research on the responses of crop plants to various types of stress, crop quality, the optimisation of buckwheat cultivation for sustainable use, as well as the biology and ecology of aquatic macrophytes, including their distribution in Slovenian lakes and rivers and the influence of environmental factors on their growth. She is the national expert on aquatic plants for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC) and leads the national surface water monitoring programme based on macrophytes. In addition, she is a member of the Slovenian Society for Water Protection, the Association of Watermen of Slovenia, the Botanical Society of Slovenia, and the International Association UV4Plants. Professor Germ has authored over 120 publications, cited more than 2,000 times, and holds an h-index of 27. She has also gained extensive experience in applied projects funded by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy, and between 2004 and 2012 she led two SRIA projects: J4-2041 Impact of selenium on the yield and quality of crop plants and J4-6428 Physiological indicators of stress in cultivated plants.
