Biological and chemical risks
Most biological and chemical risks can happen when dangerous amounts of toxic substances are released into the environment. You can be exposed to these toxic substances by:
- inhaling them,
- eating contaminated food, water or medicines,
- touching or having contact with contaminated things
You may not be able to see or smell anything unusual. During a hazardous chemical or biological incident, the authorities will issue instructions. You may be asked to evacuate, go to a higher area, position yourself upwind, stay in your accommodation or go to a designated place. You may also be in the immediate area of the incident and not be aware of the danger. If you see people vomiting, convulsing or disoriented – immediately inform medical services, leave the area and seek medical help.
