Emergency
How to prepare for an emergency
Such events can occur quickly and without warning. Planning for any emergency – including disasters of all kinds – requires you to consider all possible scenarios. If you are able to stay at home, remember that electricity, water, heating, telecommunications and transport services may be intermittent or even inoperable for long periods of time. Experts suggest stocking up on enough food, water, medicine and other essentials for your family to use. In the face of very serious threats, your home or entire community may be evacuated.
If such an emergency ever arises, remember to have evacuation plans and prepared essentials that you can take with you quickly:
- An evacuation plan that includes, at a minimum, two meeting places during an emergency. Choose one place outside your home for an emergency, such as a fire. Choose at least one place outside your immediate neighbourhood in case you cannot return home.
- Plan for contact during an emergency. Choose one person from outside your village to be the contact point for family members and you in case you are separated. Make sure everyone has information to facilitate contact, such as phone numbers, email addresses.
