Terrorism
Terrorism is a broad term for the use of force or violence against people or property to intimidate, coerce or ransom. Terrorists often make threats to create fear in society and convince citizens that the government is unable to prevent terror. The effects of terrorism can include significant casualties, damage to buildings, and disruption of such basic services as electricity, water supply, public transportation, telecommunications and medical care.
You can prepare for a terrorist attack by using the same methods that apply during other emergencies:
- Be alert and aware of what is happening in your immediate environment. A key feature of terrorism is that there are few or no warning signs;
- Take all possible precautions when travelling. Look out for conspicuous or simply unusual behaviour. Do not accept any packages from strangers. Do not leave luggage unattended;
- Remember where the emergency exits are. Think in advance about which way you could evacuate a building, underground or crowded area in a hurry. Remember where the staircases are;
- Remember items in your immediate environment. Look out for heavy or easily breakable objects that can be moved, dropped or destroyed in an explosion.
