Here’s what the new palm house will look like
The new palm house in the botanical garden of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Wrocław is set to be completed in about two years. Maciej Marzecki is the project’s architect, and Berger Bau is the project’s building company.
The construction cost is over 20 million PLN. The project is scheduled to be finished in October 2026, exactly 20 years closing the previous palm house.
The new palm house is supposed to include air-conditioning and watering systems, water cascades, photovoltaic panels on greenhouse roofs, and energy-efficient lighting. On 15 October 2024, the University of Wrocław signed a contract with the building company Berger Bau to finalise the project. Funds for finalising the project come from multiple sources, such as the income of the Botanical Garden, the University of Wrocław, and Lower Silesian and Wrocław authorities.
The greenhouse complex, whose history dates back to 1823, will be renovated in a modern project “zaprojektuj i buduj”. The new palm house consists of three main parts: Palmiarnia, Wiktoria, and Australia, and is going to have an area of 1000 m², with the highest point reaching 13 meters.
The palm house is located on the grounds of the Botanical Garden, listed on the register of Wrocław monuments. The expert of Berger Bau explained, that this is the reason the whole project has to be conducted under the supervision of a heritage conservator, which signifies the necessity of preserving existing trees and historical architectural elements, additionally, the object will still remain open throughout the whole renovating process for visitors, which is yet another difficulty.
Another key factor is the building’s accessibility to people with disabilities. As the representatives of Berger Bau stated, the new palm house will not only be an educational and scientific research place but also a space for relaxing and contemplating the beauty of nature.
