Join the research team at the Faculty of Chemistry
Dr inż. Sławomir Potocki of the UWr Faculty of Chemistry has received a prestigious NCN Sonata Bis grant. Now he needs a research team to complete the project!
Dr inż. Sławomir Potocki is among those whose projects will be funded under the OPUS 25, PRELUDIUM 22, MAESTRO 15 and SONATA BIS 13 competitions.
From the same pool, grants will go to a total of 11 of our scientists https://uwr.edu.pl/kolejne-granty-dla-badaczy-z-uwr/
The main goal of dr inż. Sławomir Potocki’s project is to understand the interaction and biological role of copper (and other divalent metal ions such as zinc, nickel and cobalt) in relation to important virulence factors: the unusual mycobacterial chaperonins of the GroEL family.
– To overcome drug-resistant mycobacterial infections (e.g., tuberculosis), a more detailed knowledge of the chemical aspects and biology of the bacterial cell is needed, especially resistance mechanisms – our researcher explains. – In the project, we will try to combine the advantages of in vitro and in vivo approaches – says dr inż. Sławomir Potocki
The title of the project is “Korelacja między Chemią Koordynacyjną, Strukturą, Dynamiką i Biologią Nietypowych Białek Opiekuńczych Prątków Chorobotwórczych” (Registration No.: 2023/50/E/ST5/00434).
The project manager proposes a unique approach – combining (i) bionieorganic chemistry with (ii) advanced NMR in solution and solids giving us information on structure-dynamics relationships, (iii) crystallography, and (iv) in vivo studies on mycobacterial cells, which will give him the ability to create a comprehensive picture of the systems under study.
The project amounts to PLN 2.54 million. The grant includes stipends for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and a postdoctoral fellowship.
Who the project manager is looking for:
– To start with, one doctoral student, one PhD student willing to do a 2-year so-called post-doctoral internship, but also ambitious first and second degree students who are not afraid to work in the laboratory in the nice company of our doctoral and master’s students! – encourages dr inż. Sławomir Potocki.
The task of PhD students and trainees will be to perform both in vitro and in vivo experiments (you can choose your preferred area). Experience in laboratory work, education in inorganic chemistry, biological chemistry, medicinal chemistry, microbiology, biotechnology or related fields is required.
What does the project manager offer in return?
– Great atmosphere in the Team of Biological Inorganic Chemistry (head: prof. dr hab. E. Gumienna-Kontecka), learning advanced physical-chemical methods viz. nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, other spectroscopic techniques (EPR, CD, UV-Vis), potentiometry, isothermal calorimetry (ITC), atomic force microscopy (AFM); will be joined by bacterial and DNA cloning, protein overexpression, microbiology experiments. In addition, we offer participation in international conferences, commercial training in selected research techniques, foreign research internships, and participation in other international projects – he enumerates. – I invite you to get interested in the project and contact us – adds dr inż. Sławomir Potocki.
