
Lecture by Prof. Matthew Schnurr
The Institute of International and Security Studies is pleased to invite you to a lecture by Prof. Matthew Schnurr entitled ‘The rhetoric and reality of digital agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa’, which will take place on 20 May 2025 at 1:45 p.m. in room 101 of the Institute of International and Security Studies at ul. Koszarowa 3.
The lecture is organised as part of a project financed by the Erasmus+ KA171 programme.

Prof. Matthew Schnurr specializes in environmental politics, agricultural biotechnology, and development studies. He is Professor and Chair of International Development Studies at Dalhousie University and holds a PhD in Geography from the University of British Columbia.
His research focuses on the political ecology of agricultural innovation, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. He has led multi-country projects on genetically modified crops, digital agriculture, and the social implications of new technologies for smallholder farmers.
Recent publications include:
- Digital agriculture will perpetuate injustice unless led from the grassroots (2025),
- Citizens as consumers: styles of reasoning about agricultural biotechnologies and publics (2025),
- The gendered value chain of matooke banana in Uganda (2024).
