Summer School on Democracy

The Summer School on Democracy has started today at the House of Europe! It is an event within the STER – Internationalisation of Doctoral Schools programme organised by the University of Wrocław (International Office and Institute of Political Science) together with the European Commission and the European Parliament. The participants were welcomed on behalf of the university authorities by Ms Urszula Broda, Head of the UWr International Office. The first lectures during the event were given by Piotr Sula from the University of Wrocław and Aleś Łahviniec, a Belarusian oppositionist and lecturer at the Free Belarusian University.

The theme of the first edition was ‘Democratic Development in the 20th and the 21st century’. The focus of this year’s discussions is ‘Civic Engagement in the Contemporary World’. There are 3 editions planned, with a total of 60 doctoral students (30 from Poland and 30 from abroad) and 3 foreign lecturers. The partners of the event are the Regional Representation of the European Commission in Wrocław and the European Parliament Information Office in Poland. Since its first editions, the Summer School of Democracy has been supported by the Jan Nowak Jeziorański College of Eastern Europe. On behalf of the UWr Institute of Political Science, participants were welcomed by Dr Piotr Sula: – This is an event funded by the National Academic Exchange under the STER programme. It is already the 2nd school within the STER programme, but at the same time the 10th School of Democracy at the University of Wrocław. This time we are hosting young scientists from all over the world, who will discuss their scientific projects for 5 days.
