Let’s talk about maths
On Friday, at the University of Wrocław, nearly 150 participants of the 2nd Lower Silesian Congress of Mathematics Teachers had the opportunity to exchange experiences and listen to interesting lectures, among others, on the use of new AI techniques in working with students.
“Teaching mathematics and learning mathematics. What do these two phrases have in common? You – teachers and lecturers,” said Prof. Robert Olkiewicz, Rector of the University of Wrocław, addressing participants of the Congress. “A mathematics teacher has a much greater impact on a student than simply ‘delivering the material.’ It is the teacher who shapes the student’s way of thinking. That is why we must ask ourselves the question: how can we turn mathematics into an adventure full of passion?” the Rector continued.
He emphasized that the focus cannot be placed solely on learning, practicing and applying algorithms (rules) in specific situations. Memorizing them without understanding leads to forgetting them very quickly. “And this leads to helplessness and discouragement, which is not what we want,” he stressed.
All participants of the Congress are aware that mathematical skills, like reading and writing, are essential tools for exploring and understanding the world. “Mathematics is present in almost every aspect of our lives,” emphasized the Congress guest, Katarzyna Lubnauer, Deputy Minister of Education, herself a PhD in mathematical sciences, who presented an outline of the ongoing education reform to the participants.
“Why do we once again meet at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Wrocław in such a group? Because we want to create a platform for exchanging experiences and to integrate the teaching community,” said the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Dariusz Buraczewski.
Nearly 150 participants of the Congress, secondary school teachers from across the region, had the opportunity not only to meet and to exchange experiences, but also to listen to interesting lectures, including the one on the use of new techniques in working with students.
The conference program consisted of, among others, lectures by Grzegorz Plebanek, Tomasz Elsner, and Agnieszka Hejna-Łyżwa, as well as workshops led by Jarosław Wróblewski.
Among the participants was also the Lower Silesian Education Superintendent, Ewa Skrzywanek, a co-organizer of the event. We also hosted Member of Parliament, Jolanta Niezgodzka, a graduate of the University of Wrocław, as well as the Vice Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Wojciech Bochnak.
We would like to thank all the Teachers for participating in the Congress and invite you again next year!
