
Lithuania Congress
The 7th International Lithuania Congress concluded at the University of Wrocław. The conference commemorated several important anniversaries for Lithuania, such as the 20th anniversary of its accession to the European Union and NATO and the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendly Relations with Poland.
The ceremonial opening of the congress took place in Aula Leopoldina, where the gathered guests were welcomed by representatives of the authorities of the University of Wrocław: prof. Stefan Kiedroń – Vice-Rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Arkadiusz Lewicki – Dean of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Wrocław and prof. Bartłomiej Krzan – Vice-Dean for Research and International Cooperation at the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Wrocław.
During the congress, three expert lectures and over 50 papers were delivered in 12 thematic sections, covering issues such as language and identity, literature and politics. An important part of the event was an expert debate on the 20th anniversary of the accession of Lithuania and Poland to the European Union, with the participation of representatives of the European Commission in Wrocław.
The speakers included scientists and students from various universities in Poland, such as the University of Wrocław, the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, the Jagiellonian University, Adam Mickiewicz University and the University of Warsaw, and from around the world, including the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the University of Vienna, Charles University in Prague, Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Georgian Technical University, the University of Helsinki and the University of Pisa, as well as representatives of research centers such as the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore.
The congress also included cultural events – the Marius Jonutis’ exhibition “FRASZKI/NIEKAI” and an evening of Lithuanian polyphonic songs and traditional dances in the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław.
The congress was organized by the University of Wrocław, the „Labas” Lithuanian Studies Club and the Pobliza Foundation, in cooperation with Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of the Republic of Lithuania. The event was held under the honorary patronage of, among others: Rector of the University of Wrocław prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz, Vice-Chairman of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania dr Paulius Saudargas and the Mayor of Wrocław,Jacek Sutryk.
