Maynooth University is a new member of Arqus Alliance

University of Wrocław warmly welcomes Maynooth University from Ireland as the 9th member of the Arqus Alliance! Today, we already have 9 member universities: University of Granada, Leipzig, Lion, Padua, Vilnius, Minho, Graz, Wrocław, and Maynooth! The Arqus Alliance enhancement aligns with the strategy set in 2021. Thanks to the joining of the next dynamically developing, engaged university, which leads crucial scientific research, Arqus will be even more culturally and linguistically diverse and will be enriched by the study experiences of the next excellent research unit. Arcus’ coordinator and exec on the 20th of January had their first official visit at Maynooth University.

− We are very happy about Maynooth University in Ireland. The alliance’s enhancement is very helpful. We are opening up for new geographical directions. The Irish university is dynamically developing, it carries out interesting research, and may contribute a lot to our alliance. Welcome to Arcus! − says prof. Patrycja Matusz, vice-rector for projects and international relationships.

Maynooth University is a well-known institution all over the world, situated 25 kilometres from Dublin in Ireland. It is the fastest developing University in the country. It is in first place in the Times Higher Education’s newest ranking – Young University Rankings 2022.

Maynooth University’s leading role in digital transformation and data, climate change and sustainable development, and European integration have been identified by the Alliance as priority research areas.

Maynooth University is also engaged in helping Ukrainian students and researchers, giving access to the Irish higher education system, which proves its openness and engagement in European matters.

Maynooth University was officially established in 1997, so on the 16th of June, the university celebrated its 25th anniversary. But in fact, the origins of this university go back much further and are linked to Ireland’s oldest university, the Royal College of St Patrick (founded in 1795), which has over 200 years of tradition in research and didactics.

Today, at Maynooth University, over 15,000 students from over 150 countries study. Maynooth offers a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in the humanities, engineering and social science fields, such as in business, law and education.  The university also offers a range of international programs.

Maynooth University has rich experience in finalising joint projects with 8 other Arqus partners, is linked to international institutions, leads studies, and is engaged in the region.

Maynooth University joins over 32,0000 students, 24,000 academic teachers and researchers, and 17,000 administrative employees in Arcus’ member universities in their mission to work on European higher education, research, and innovation through close cooperation and integration in seeking common, equal, and balanced collaboration:

  • Educating critical and socially engaged European citizens, prepared for lifelong education.
  • Generating great, open, and challenge-directed innovative and reflective knowledge.
  • Acting as an engaged multi-tiered socio-economic subject. Overcoming boundaries in effective cooperation.

Dorothy Kelly, Arcus Alliance’s coordinator and internationalisation prorector at Granada University, declared that Maynooth University’s joining the Arqus Alliance is wonderful news for us, and we could not be more satisfied.

Maynooth University promotes a balanced commitment to learning, teaching, and research as equally important aspects of the university’s mission. Furthermore, it is strongly committed to promoting and developing equality and diversity, which is a core value of our Alliance.’

Maynooth University president, Professor Eeva Leinonen, said: Partnership beyond disciplines, borders and cultures will have key significance for resolving problems, which we are challenged with as a global society. The Alliance of European Universities gives us that possibility. We are happy for our collaboration with that valued group of institutions, and what is more important, for the benefits which the alliance provides for students, employees, and the whole European community.’

Arqus is looking forward to when colleagues from Maynooth will make themselves at home at this new step of the alliance’s activity.  As the Irish proverb says, ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’. What means ‘Together we are better’.
