
Meeting with Dr Yuri Shevchuk from Columbia University
The Department of Ukrainian Studies at the Institute of Slavic Studies invites you to a special event – a meeting with Dr Yuri Shevchuk, a distinguished linguist and scholar of Ukrainian cinema, and senior lecturer at Columbia University in New York. In his lecture, Dr. Shevchuk will explore the role of early Ukrainian cinema from the 1920s in shaping modern national identity. The city as a space of multiculturalism, transformation, and emancipation will serve as a starting point for reflections on film language and the culture of modernism.
The open lecture will take place on Wednesday, 14 May at 12 p.m. The lecture will be delivered in Polish. This event is part of the IDUB Visiting Professors Program.

Dr Yuri Shevchuk is a renowned scholar and senior lecturer at Columbia University in New York, where he teaches Ukrainian language, Soviet and post-Soviet cinema, and Slavic cultures.
He is widely recognized as a leading expert in Ukrainian cinema studies, lexicography, and Ukrainian language teaching methodology. He heads the Ukrainian language program at Columbia and has directed the Ukrainian Film Club of Columbia University since 2004 – the only permanent forum for Ukrainian cinema in North America.
His academic work includes the widely used textbook Beginner’s Ukrainian and the highly acclaimed Ukrainian-English Collocations Dictionary (2021).
Dr Shevchuk has taught at leading universities across North America and Europe. He is currently working on a practical course in Ukrainian phonetics. His latest essay, Reframing Early Ukrainian Film History: A Case Study in Decolonization, will appear in the volume Digital Combat: Re/Framing Eastern European and Ukrainian Cinema, edited by Yuri Levin.
