Jak funkcjonują polskie media?
On 4 July, a protest by the Polish media began. Almost all of them are taking part in the action organised by the Chamber of Press Publishers: Wirtualna Polska, Ringier Axel Springer Polska, Agora, Polska Press, ZPR Media Group, Gremi Media, Bauer Publishing House, Infor, as well as over 350 local titles. The issue is the amendment of the Copyright and Related Rights Act. At this stage of legislative work, the government has not taken into account the proposals put forward by editors who want to look after their interests in disputes with global technology giants.
The world of the media – their functioning and problems is brought closer, albeit from a slightly different perspective, by Paweł Urbaniak, in his latest book System odpowiedzialności mediów w Polsce na tle systemów w innych krajach. In the book, he presented research results from 110 interviews with employees of Polish media. Nearly 80 per cent of them stated that various forms of media regulation serve to restrict their freedom and, in Poland, are additionally used for political purposes. Paweł Urbaniak presented the author’s classification of media self-regulation tools, taking into account the press, radio, television and the Internet. He also discussed how the creation of a system of media responsibility is becoming part of journalistic culture, which noticeably determines the daily behaviour of journalists.
“Thanks to the facts and phenomena described in the book, to the evocation of research and theories that are key to its purpose and subject matter, a monograph has been created that organises the issues in a comprehensive, synthetic, substantively and methodologically appropriate manner and supplements the previous findings with new, relevant and original ones. Its merit is to give the described issues a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, which testifies to an excellent orientation in the issues, scientific maturity and competence in conducting scientific research and presenting its results” – wrote prof. Katarzyna Pokorna-Ignatowicz.

Toksofilos on sale again!
The unique, first Polish (and sixth worldwide) translation of the 16th-century treatise Toksofilos. Szkoła łucznictwa is back on sale, after the publisher sold out of the first edition on the stump. Roger Ascham, an English courtier and humanist, wrote it at a time when archery as a craft of war was being supplanted by firearms. Thanks to Toksofilos, it became a noble sport, popular first among the aristocracy and then permeating all social classes. At the same time, stories about Robin Hood of Sherwood were already widespread!
Toksofilos teaches how to hit the target, how to correctly select and use archery equipment, and how to control your body and mind to be effective. It is a summary of the practical knowledge of traditional archery, as well as an excellent resource on education and morals. It is a translation created by archers for archers – young learners, professional athletes and enthusiasts, and seniors with a passion for this refined sport. But not only that – it is a book for all those who would like to discover how the rapidly changing times and mores of Renaissance Europe can be commented on through the example of the bow.
On the YouTube channel of the University of Wrocław Press, you can watch a recording of Rozmowa o Poranek, conducted on TVP Wrocław with dr hab. Michał Surma – a graduate in biotechnology at the University of Wrocław and a keen archer – the originator of the translation and one of its translators. We warmly encourage you to watch this conversation: https://youtu.be/wnRr0kewz5s and recommend the book, which looks great thanks to its linen-embossed cover, specially prepared model and contemporary illustrations by the illustrator Andrzej Graniak!
