Announcement: Między Śląskiem a Italią. Studia z historii sztuki nowożytnej dedykowane dr. Arkadiuszowi Wojtyle

Between Silesia and Italy is a publication of a special kind, as it is dedicated to dr Arkadiusz Wojtyła, who died unexpectedly in May 2021, and who for years had been associated – first as a student and then as an employee – with the Institute of Art History at the University of Wrocław. An extremely colourful and fascinating figure, with extensive horizons both in research and in the humanities in general. Despite his young age, dr Wojtyła also made a name for himself in the wider academic forum, particularly as a social activist and a very good organiser, and not only in Poland, but also at the University of Genoa.

The volume Between Silesia and Italy contains studies in the history of modern art by Polish and Italian authors dedicated to Arkadiusz Wojtyła (1978-2021), a Wrocław-based art historian and researcher who devoted his scholarly interests to the Baroque, particularly the sacred art of this era. He fell in love with Italian art at first sight, tracing its traces and links between Silesia and Italy.

They include articles discussing the painterly visualisation of love in the works of artists from Correggio to Luca Cambiaso, texts devoted to funerary issues – funerary iconography, emblems and sarcophagi, and works describing the beauty of Baroque works in the former Jesuit complex in Wrocław (now the University of Wrocław) with its most perfect exemplification – Aula Leopoldina, as well as presenting the results of research into the decoration of churches in Legnickie Pole, Jawor and Żagań, and delving into the secrets of patronage, without which it would have been difficult for artists of the time to exist.

A kind of punch-line to these articles can be found in the reflections on the influence of the Italian Baroque on contemporary sacred art.
In addition, the book contains a complete bibliography of Arkadiusz Wojtyła’s works, showing the breadth and scope of his interests, and more than 150 illustrations. They reveal the imperishable beauty of Baroque interiors, frescoes and arrangements, thus allowing us to better understand the fascination with this art of a researcher who passed away too early to complete his life’s work – a dissertation devoted to celestial vaults in Catholic churches and chapels in Silesia and Kłodzko County from the fourth quarter of the seventeenth century to the eighteenth century. It was to bear the biblical title ‘Świątynia Boga w niebie się otwarła’ (eng. The Temple of God in Heaven Has Opened), which guided Arkadiusz Wojtyła’s research and much of the work contained in this volume.

This item will be on pre-order from 1 August on wuwr.eu!

Błękitny fin de siècle sold out!

An extraordinary book and an extraordinary success for the University of Wrocław Press! Three months have passed since the premiere of Justyna Bajda’s book Błękitny fin de siècle. Kolor niebieski w kulturze i literaturze Młodej Polski (Gabriela Zapolska – Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer – Stanisław Wyspiański) – the publication is still in the news, and WUWr is waiting for a reprint, which can be expected in the last week of July.

In the meantime, we encourage you to watch and read the material related to this item. These are just a few of them – it is impossible to list all the people and media who have mentioned the publication, if only on their social media, and it has also been praised by well-known influencers – such as Fireverka Weronika Zych and Katarzyna Czajka-Kominiarczuk (Zwierz popkulturalny)!

You can order the book now: https://wuwr.eu/produkt/blekitny-fin-de-siecle/

New magazine look and cover puzzle

We have already mentioned how the journals published by WUWr, available on the platform Scientific Journals on the Web, are changing. A new layout has already been introduced for ‘Prace Literackie’ and ‘Wrocławsko-Lwowskie Zeszyty Prawnicze’. What’s next? A riddle has been published on the Publisher’s Facebook and Instagram. Whoever guesses it can count on a printed issue of a widely read magazine (which can be interesting for everyone!) and the opportunity to choose the colour of its next cover! We encourage you to participate. Just leave a comment with your answer under the reel.
