Wspólnota ekspertów. Zarządzanie marką kraju

Emotions are slowly subsiding after a heated election campaign in Wrocław and many other parts of the country (as many as nine provincial cities held second rounds of elections!). Right now, when the political dust is settling, it is time for evaluation, reflection on the future and strengthening the image of local communities. For politicians, civil servants, local government officials regardless of their political affiliation and presented values – for those who want to increase the prestige and recognition of their region, we recommend reading Waldemar Bojakowski’s book “Wspólnota ekspertów. Zarządzanie marką kraju”. According to many researchers, politicians and business representatives, a country must effectively manage its own brand in order to increase its competitiveness and agility. Thus, the author considers the relationship and interplay between the eponymous community of experts and the media co-shaping social and political realities. The conclusions of the reading can inspire discussions on the perception and use of expertise in the later modern era. Highly recommended!

FOREWORD! Discover Polish dialects in a new way with a new book by prof. Włodzimierz Wysoczański

This week, a remarkable study will go to print: “Kody językowo-kulturowe w polskiej frazematyce gwarowej” by prof. Włodzimierz Wysoczański. The author has captured the extraordinary complexity and diversity of Polish dialects. Analysing the output of the linguistic creativity of generations of dialect users, the author addresses the issue of the influence of culture on language and the question of cultural memory. In the innovative concept he proposes, using a code-thematic approach, he makes it possible to “rediscover dialects”. By doing so, it helps to preserve cultural heritage, build regional identity and strengthen generational bonding.

The extensive source material includes more than 20,000 phraseologisms, given in the form of source notation together with the geographical location of their occurrence and meaning. The author shows the multiplicity of Polish dialects, their distinctiveness, but also their links with the national language and links with the languages of our neighbours (German, Czech, Slovak, Ukrainian, etc.). The presented collection of phraseologisms is a peculiar “journey through words”, which have been naming and interpreting the surrounding reality for centuries. And, to use one of the dialects, one could say that the author does not give the reader a gobbledygook under his nose, he does not byte, and his eyes will laugh at this book on their own.

FOREWORD! Spór o Wyspy Kurylskie

We are also finishing the book “Spór o Wyspy Kurylskie w perspektywie prawa międzynarodowego publicznego i stosunków międzynarodowych. Studium krytyczne” by prof. Rafał Czachor.

The root of the Japanese-Russian dispute over the Kuril Islands is the imprecise regulations concerning Japan’s territorial losses after World War II. The wording used in acts of international law and their different interpretations by the parties to the dispute led them into a “dead end” on the Kuril issue. Thus, the peripheral area in the geographical sense has become a key, even geopolitical link in their mutual relations. Indeed, it has important implications for the foreign and security policies of both countries, their economies, and their perceptions of themselves in terms of international roles and identities.

The critical perspective of deliberation adopted, has taken a broad look at the conflict around the archipelago. Law turns out to be only one regulator of social relations, including inter-state relations, and by far not the most significant one. The dispute over the Kuril Islands is an example of the rivalry of powers that try to hide their imperial ambitions behind legal arguments, remaining indifferent to the fate of those who do not fall into the category of “civilised nations”.

Going beyond the usual patterns of territorial claims, the author draws attention to the fate of the hosts of the Kuril Islands, the Aynes, who became extinct in the 20th century, which has been silenced by international law. The book fills a gap in knowledge about the legal and political conditions of the dispute over the archipelago. It also shows the extent to which contemporary international relations and law reflect historically and culturally conditioned relations based on patriarchy and violence.
